Steering Progress Through Challenges: NCFDC's Economic Contributions to South Simcoe in 2024-2025
From April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, the Nottawasaga Community Futures Development Corporation (NCFDC) demonstrated its continued commitment to fostering economic growth and resilience in South Simcoe. Through strategic partnerships with municipal, provincial, and federal governments, as well as community organizations, NCFDC implemented impactful initiatives to support local businesses and residents. This work was made possible with funding from the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).
At NCFDC, we recognize the crucial role that small businesses play in our economy. Throughout 2024-2025, we focused on providing financial support and expert advice to entrepreneurs across South Simcoe, helping them adapt to economic fluctuations and new market realities.
In collaboration with municipal, provincial, and federal governments, as well as community organizations, NCFDC launched strategic projects to create economic opportunities for residents and businesses. The organization implemented 22 highly successful initiatives, conducting over 700 in-depth consulting sessions with more than 500 businesses, and providing $515,000 in loans through our Community Investment Fund to 9 local businesses, which helped to create or preserve over 37 jobs.
Furthermore, NCFDC organized 16 Business Support Workshops during this period, working closely with community partners such as the County of Simcoe and the municipalities of Adjala-Tosorontio, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Essa, Innisfil, and New Tecumseth. Through its ongoing partnership with the PARO Centre for Women's Enterprise, NCFDC remained committed to offering specialized loan programs specifically designed to support women entrepreneurs.
NCFDC proudly hosted the Fuelled by Females event to celebrate International Women's Day. The gathering brought together women from various backgrounds for a day of inspiration, connection, and empowerment. It highlighted the diverse accomplishments and stories of local women making meaningful contributions in their community.
A significant development during this period was the delivery of the AI Bootcamp for Entrepreneurs. In partnership with the DMZ Innisfil, the bootcamp was designed to equip local small business owners with the skills and support needed to leverage AI tools, boosting productivity, enhancing customer experiences, and increasing market competitiveness.
Additionally, NCFDC hosted a Small Business Roundtable with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister Filomena Tassi, and Minister François-Philippe Champagne at Alliston Flooring. The discussion focused on the operational challenges local businesses face, the current economic climate, and the need for customized government support. Participants examined existing support systems and explored opportunities for deeper collaboration to drive regional economic growth.
Through these and other initiatives, NCFDC showcased its commitment to supporting local communities, fostering entrepreneurship, and contributing to the development of a resilient and sustainable local economy.
Looking ahead to the next fiscal year, the organization remains dedicated to expanding its reach and impact, enhancing its digital infrastructure, and investing in its staff and volunteers to better serve the South Simcoe community.
A prime example of the impact of NCFDC’s support is the success story of Christina Deyogolos, founder of K9 Pawvengers. Recognizing the growing demand for high-quality, personalized pet care in Barrie, Innisfil, and surrounding areas, Deyogolos launched K9 Pawvengers to offer a comprehensive one-stop-shop model including daycare, grooming, in-home care, and hydrotherapy services. With a focus on certified and compassionate care, the business quickly set itself apart in a competitive market.
With funding from Nottawasaga Futures, K9 Pawvengers successfully transitioned from a service-based model to a full-service retail location in Innisfil. The business now serves more than 230 loyal clients, has created new local jobs, and formed strategic partnerships, such as with APL Cosmetic Teeth Cleaning, to expand its offerings. K9 Pawvengers continues to build momentum with a strong online presence, media recognition, and a 4.9-star Google rating, solidifying its role as a trusted provider in the region’s growing pet care industry.
