BUSINESS REGISTRATION/RENEWAL

DID YOU KNOW...

The provided text outlines important requirements and procedures for business registration in Ontario:

The Ontario Government has changed how businesses register for services in Ontario.

My Ontario Account allows for increased security and authentication, while providing an improved experience to users. Note: ONe-Key is no longer available for access. If you previously used ONe-Key to log into your ServiceOntario Account, you will need to migrate your ONe-Key over to a My Ontario Account.

You can use the My Ontario Account Help Guide to aid you in the registration process.

Business Name Search: Conducting a name search is a crucial step for individuals starting a business. By searching for the availability of a business name before registration, aspiring entrepreneurs can avoid potential legal issues and ensure that their chosen name is unique and not already in use by another company.

Business Name Registration: All businesses operating under a name other than the owner's name must register their business name with the provincial government. This is done with either an incorporation or a master business licence.

Renewal of Business Name Registration: Businesses must renew their master business licence name registration every five years. It's crucial to remember that the provincial government doesn't send reminder notices for renewal. Renewals are done through My Ontario Account.

Permits and Licences: Some municipalities require different types of business licences or permits. Businesses should check with their local municipality to determine if they require specific permits or licences.

Health Tax for Self-Employed: If you’re self-employed and making $20,000 or more a year you pay the premium as part of your CRA return.

Registration with Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB): Businesses hiring employees or contractors may need to register with the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board.

GST/HST Registration: The GST/HST is a sales tax on supplies of most goods and services in Canada. Find out if you have to register for a GST/HST account.
